1. Turning Connections Into College Scholarships
   Adam connected overlooked Utah basketball players with college coaches. Every player from his son’s club team who wanted to play in college ultimately landed a scholarship opportunity.

2. Giving a $75,000 Order to a Competitor
   Adam had the purchase order but knew a competitor could serve the customer better. He gave them the $75,000 job, choosing service over commission.

3. A Two-Year Quest, Solved Through One Relationship
   Johnny spent two years hoping and trying to connect with a personal hero. Then a friend Johnny had generously supported made the introduction, opening a door Johnny couldn’t open himself.

Connection is deeper than networking. Networking can become transactional. Genuine connection starts with curiosity about people, their gifts, their needs, and where they are going.

Build relational equity. Adam described relationships almost like a bank account. Every time we serve, encourage, introduce, or help someone, we make a relational deposit. Adam has even referred significant business to competitors when he believed they could serve a customer better.

Disconnect from the outcome. This may be the most freeing principle of all. When we stop calculating what every relationship might produce for us, we become free to generously create value.

Both the book and Bob Burg the person have been a deep source of encouragement and wisdom for me over the past few years. In our interview, he mentions “Drive-By Mentors” in his life — people who had a disproportionate impact, compared to the actual time spent.

Bob Burg is the best-selling co-author of The Go-Giver, a business parable that has shaped the mindset of millions. The book is a reminder that long-term success comes from shifting your focus from getting to giving. Bob defines giving as creating value—consistently and intentionally—for the people you serve.

This is not theory for him. It’s how he lives. You can feel it the moment he speaks. He encourages everyone around him. He brings clarity and wisdom to professionals. He empowers relational excellence with his presence.

When asked about his Origin Story, Bob recalls “I was very lucky in that I was raised by two wonderful parents.” Parental love was a huge factor in his development.

His posture of generosity didn’t only come from this loving support, but also from adversity. Bob opened up about his lifelong experience of obsessive compulsive disorder. But in Bob, great pain has given birth to powerful influence for the good of many.

One key turning point came when he was in a sales slump early in his career. An older co-worker pulled him aside and said, “Don’t make money your target. Make serving others your target. The money is the reward.”

That sentence changed everything. It became the foundation of Bob’s work and helped shape The Go-Giver into what it is today.

So many people live in tension between putting their own interests or the interests of others first. Bob’s message offers a way forward. He gives people permission to sell — and act in the world — in a way that honors both their heart and their goals.

Think about it like this.

You have a thousand keys to a thousand doors.

But they’re not your doors.

Most of us—if we’re honest—spend our lives trying to open doors for ourselves. Opportunity, advancement, success, progress. I get it. We feel the weight of our needs, our family’s needs, and our own dreams.

But that’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about the thousands of keys you carry that can open doors for someone else.

And you don’t even know it.

The Degrees of Connection Are Insane

I’m seeing it all the time.
I met a kid at a car wash who used to work for a friend of mine.

Another friend of mine met his wife through an employee who knew someone that had gone to his same college and set them up on a date.

I Always Longed for the Benevolent Upperclassman

In high school, I always longed for the benevolent upperclassman.
That older senior who’d throw his arm around me, call me up, invest in me, believe in me.

Never happened for me in that way.

But now—I am that person. We all are.

We have the chance to become the very thing we once wished someone would be for us. To see someone younger, newer, quieter—and make them feel chosen.

To hold out a key.

The Staggering Power of Connection

What happens when we open our eyes to this reality?
What happens when we begin to comprehend the staggering power of connection—and press into it?

This is how:

• We give undivided attention to the people in our lives.

• We listen with sensitive ears.

• We listen for opportunities.

• We listen for connections.

• We listen for dreams.

Then we take the risk—
The risk to make the connection.
To connect people who don’t know each other.
To do it with a short blurb of context about why they could benefit to each other.

If Connection Is Your Kryptonite

Let’s be real.

If you’re someone for whom connection is Kryptonite, or an area of weakness, this might feel awkward, hard, or even draining. That’s okay.

Everyone can learn to improve the art of Connection. Everyone.
But Connectors will always do it more—and often, more naturally.

If you’re not a Connector, don’t try to become one. But do try to stretch a little.

How to Use Your Thousand Keys

You don’t need to overhaul your life.
You just need to be generous with your keys—
5-minute acts of connection that can open whole new worlds for people.

Here are some specific ways to start right now:

• Text two people and say, “You two need to know each other. Here’s why…” Example: “Sarah runs a nonprofit for teen girls. Alex does creative video work for causes. Y’all should talk.”

• Make a habit of asking, “What are you dreaming about right now?” Dreams need doors. Your keys might fit.

• When someone shares a challenge, ask: “Want help brainstorming people who could help?” One question. That’s all it takes.

It’s Not Just for Them. It’s for You.

Here’s the secret: connection isn’t just a massive benefit to others; it also has amazing effects for you and your life.

When you make a meaningful connection for someone, it builds your confidence.
It strengthens your connection. It reminds you that your life matters—not just in what you achieve, but in what you unlock for others.

And over time, those keys you gave away?
They come back to you.
In surprising, beautiful ways.

A Thousand Keys. A Thousand People.

You have a thousand keys that could open someone else’s doors.

And there are a thousand people out there with keys to yours.

But we never know—
Because we don’t take the time to know each other.
To know what we dream about.
What we need.
What we long for.

This is how my brain works, but it’s the result of both my native disposition and many years of intentional experience.

Much of it can be learned.

Learn to be in awe.

Learn to see the hidden treasures in others.
Learn to see the beauty of connection.
Learn to appreciate its power.

Look for doors to open for other people.
Take the risk.

It’s not just something I do; it’s a part of my innate design. I think about connection all the time. It’s part of my identity, my calling, and my area of joy and effortlessness.

Story Time

All Connections Aren't the Same

Lately, I’ve been watching incredible real-world things unfold through the power of connection. And I’ve realized something: not all connections are the same. There are different kinds of connection, for different outcomes.

After years of doing this work, I’ve come to see that most meaningful progress comes from four distinct types of connection. This framework is for my fellow Connectors to sharpen your Superpower—and for anyone in need of connection to know what to look for.

1. Need / Provider Connection (formerly Resource Connection)

Progress Type: Need → Solution

This is when someone has a clear need—and you connect them with a person, service, or product that meets it.

• “You need a graphic designer? I know someone great.”

• “Looking for a new payroll system? Here's what worked for us.”

• “You’re stuck on email deliverability? Let me introduce you to my tech wizard.”

This type of connection often leads to contracts, purchases, and clear deliverables. It has a transactional element, yes, but it can be powered by trust.

2. Strategic Connection

Progress Type: Mission Alignment → Collaborative Action

Here, you’re connecting two (or more) people or organizations with shared goals who could achieve more by working together.

• “You both serve busy parents—maybe you could co-host a webinar series.”

• “You’ve got a product, they’ve got an audience. Feels like there’s a campaign waiting to happen.”

• “You're both building platforms for freelancers—why not explore a joint toolset?”

Strategic Connections are all about collaboration for shared impact. Not just helping—but building something together.

3. Kindred Connection

Progress Type: Shared Experience → Mutual Encouragement

This one is all heart.

Kindred Connections happen when you introduce people with similar journeys, roles, or values—so they can share wisdom, fuel each other, and not feel alone.

• “You’re both solo founders navigating burnout—talking might really help.”

• “You're both career-switchers in your 40s—you'll totally get each other.”

• “You’re both new moms trying to keep your creative work alive—yes, you need each other.”

This isn’t about business. It’s about belonging—and the courage that comes from being understood.

4. Mentor Connection

Progress Type: Potential → Activation

Sometimes, what someone needs most is a nudge toward their next level—a person, opportunity, or idea that expands their vision.

• “You’ve got leadership instincts—talk to this person who’s five steps ahead.”

• “This mastermind changed how I think—you’d thrive in it.”

• “You remind me of who I was ten years ago—I want to help you skip some of the pain.”

Mentor Connections unlock something. They can ignite explosive forward motion.
