Why I Use Substack!
People are starting to ask my why I use Substack! Substack is the hub of my current content strategy. Substack first, then Podcast, then LinkedIn, then YouTube, then Instagram. What I create in Substack is the ocean, and the other platforms are the streams. This is my version of a COPE strategy, (Create Once Publish Everywhere).
The Ramble
Bottom Line
The bottom line is that I use Substack because it’s easy, free, provides a subscription revenue stream, let’s me own my audience, and functions as a hub for my content, including text, video, audio, and images.
If you want to dig deeper, you can get the whole story below.
My Priorities as a Content Creator
I want to reach as many people as possible and make it easy for them to engage. Some people love reading. Others would rather watch a video or listen while they drive. I don’t want to force anyone into one way of consuming content—I want to meet them where they are and make it easy for them to engage however they prefer.
I don’t want to let some algorithm decide who sees my work. I want full control over my audience. Substack lets me own my email list, reach my subscribers directly, and take my audience with me wherever I go. That’s a non-negotiable for me.
I don’t like holding back content. If I write something I love, I want it out now so I can point people to it when the right conversation comes up. But I also recognize that most engagement happens through the newsletter, so I love that I can publish immediately and schedule it for later. Best of both worlds.
I want my content to be multi-format and flexible. Some people don’t want to read an article, but they’ll watch a video. Others just want to listen. I want my content to be as accessible as possible so people can engage however they want.
I want to grow and monetize without putting up barriers. Substack makes it easy to build an audience for free, while also letting me offer paid subscriptions in a natural way. No friction, no gatekeeping—just pure audience connection and growth.
Why Susbstack?
Substack is a newsletter tool at its core, using email as the primary delivery mechanism while also publishing content to a dedicated website. Unlike social platforms that restrict reach and control your audience, Substack prioritizes creators—giving full ownership of your email list and the freedom to export your subscribers anytime. This is radically different from platforms like LinkedIn or Instagram, where algorithm changes can drastically limit who sees your content, and you aren’t given direct one-to-one access to your audience.
One of the biggest advantages is publishing flexibility. I don’t like holding back content. Recently, I wrote an article I was really excited about, but based on my weekly publishing cadence, it wouldn’t hit my newsletter audience for another month. I didn’t want to wait—I wanted it live now, so I could point people to it in conversations. With Substack, I got the best of both worlds—I published it immediately so it was accessible, and then scheduled it to go out to my newsletter audience later. That way, I could ride the excitement of the piece right away while still keeping my content pipeline intact.
Substack also allows articles, videos, audio, links, and images all in one post, so readers can engage however they prefer—whether reading, watching, or listening. This multi-format flexibility maximizes engagement.
Finally, Substack is free, simple to use, and monetizable. It’s a content hub, not just a newsletter, making it the best platform for audience ownership, engagement, and long-term growth.
A Typical Substack Day
I wake up Wednesdays, knowing that a post needs to go out for the Superpower Quest newsletter this morning.
This might be an interview, or an article, or a profile of someone with a really cool Superpower.
Maybe I’ve written or recorded something already, but maybe not! This is my passion, so I can always create something.
I dictate into Google Keep Notes, a bunch of raw text about what I’m thinking about. I input this into ChatGPT, and ask it to organize my thoughts, keeping at least 70% of my verbatim language.
I edit the final product to maintain consistency of voice, copy/paste into the Substack editor, do some formatting, and then set it to publish Wednesday morning between 5 and 6 AM.
It goes out! People respond, sometimes with comments, sometimes just emailing me back (like you did, Karl!) and I get the joy of interacting with people I love over ideas that I’m passionate about.
Sometimes I’ll take the first paragraph and repurpose for LinkedIn (needs to happen more.)
If it’s an interview, then the audio automatically feeds into my podcast channel from Riverside, where I record all those videos, with one click.
Sometimes I’ll take clips and throw them into Instagram (needs to happen more.)
Videos also automatically load to my YouTube channel from Substack, due to a YouTube integration that comes with the service.
I can feel the momentum start to build as my COPE process gets more and more dialed in. I am still in early stages at this point, but interaction and engagement are increasing, which is my favorite part.
This is why I love Substack. It’s a simple platform that does what it’s supposed to do and allows me to have really fun conversations and opportunities with people I love.
