How do you know who you really are?
And what happens when you’ve been living from a false identity?
I had the privilege of interviewing Keli DeWitt, a certified life coach with Identity Exchange, whose identity is Interpreter of Truth.
For background, I’ve told you about the impact of the book Living Fearless by Jamie Winship in my life. Jamie and his wife Donna Winship oversee a consulting company called Identity Exchange (identityexchange.com) that carries out the transformative teachings of the book for individuals and groups. Keli is one of the coaches on staff with IDX.
From the moment we started talking, I knew this conversation would be powerful. Keli doesn’t just help people see truth; she helps them apply it to their lives. This gentle, nurturing human lives to help people see and live their True Identity. Here’s where Keli lands within the Superpower Quest framework:
Core Drive: Harmony
Hero Type: Connector/Nurturer
Superpower: Interpreter of Truth
What Does It Mean to Be an Interpreter of Truth?
Keli explained that we’re all born wired for connection, but as we grow, we accumulate false beliefs about ourselves. These beliefs shape our identity—until we stop and listen to the inner truth beneath the noise.
For Keli, her identity as an Interpreter of Truth became clear when she realized that she naturally distills big concepts into bite-sized, personal applications. It’s not just about knowing truth—it’s about living it.
The Lies We Believe and How They Shape Us
Keli told a story about a little boy who didn’t finish his dinner and didn’t get dessert. Instead of recognizing the simple cause-and-effect, he started believing, Mom loves my brother more than me. That one moment of comparison planted a seed of self-doubt that could grow into a lifelong false belief.
This happens to all of us. We encounter pain, make meaning out of it, and unknowingly build our lives around lies. Some of us cope by overachieving, proving our worth through endless striving. Others give up, accepting the false belief that they’ll never be enough.
You Are Not Defined by Your Behavior
One of the most powerful takeaways from our conversation was this: Your behavior does not define you.
Keli illustrated this with a hands-on exercise she does with her grandsons. She shows them a diamond—a reflection of their true identity. Then she covers it with Play-Doh, representing false beliefs and behaviors. The more they live from those false identities, the more people (including themselves) see only the Play-Doh, not the diamond underneath.
But only love can wash away the residue.
Identity Work is for Everyone
This isn’t just for people of faith. It’s for anyone who wants to live from their true self instead of from fear, comparison, or pain. That’s what Identity Exchange, founded by Jamie and Donna Winship, is all about. Their book Living Fearless was the most impactful book I’ve ever read besides the Bible.
My Own Identity: The Creative Connector
At the end of our conversation, Keli asked me about my own identity. After going through the process myself, I discovered that I am The Creative Connector and The Hearer and Holder of Hearts.
For most of my life, I was already walking in this, but without language for it. Now, instead of just doing what I naturally do, I get to consciously live it out.
Final Thought: The Power of Walking in Your True Identity
When you know who you are, the stakes aren’t so high. You’re no longer controlled by fear, performance, or comparison. You’re free.

How do I discover my identity using your paradigm, Johnny?
Great question! My framework is much more geared towards understanding design. Design fits hand and glove with identity, but they're not exactly the same. You are created with the precise and exact design that you need to carry out your identity, and your identity determines your design. Keli and Identity Exchange help people discover their identity, which is who you are, in their essence: The name that only your creator can give you. My Identity is "Beloved Son, Creative Connector, The Hearer and Holder of Hearts." My design, or my Superpower, is "Connector/Dreamer," and "Authentic Connection for Mutual Progress." My design is the mechanism by which I carry out my Identity.
Language breaks down here, and it's not so black and white.
But when I read Living Fearless, about identity, it felt like a necessary element in top of the discovery process that I teach through my book, The Superpower Quest.
Living out the teachings of both books together has super charged me, and I think it will do the same for others.
